From January 17 to 20 prof Michele Ferrero, the Director of Latinitas Sinica, the Centre for the promotion of Latin at Beijing Foreign Studies University, has paid a visit to FLCC (Facoltà di Lettere Cristiane e Classiche).
The relationship between Beijing Foreign Studies University and FLCC goes back to 2005, when the first students of that prestigious university came to study Latin at FLCC.
In 2007 the then Rettor Magnifico prof Mario Toso, together with the Dean prof Mario Maritano signed a first agreement for reciprocal cooperation between FLCC and Beijing Foreign Studies University. The relationship between the two institutions grew even closer after 2009, when prof Ferrero began teaching Latin at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 2010, thanks to the links with FLCC, the National Research Centre for Overseas Sinology of Beijing Foreign Studies University was also able to begin a very significant work of research on Qing-Dynasty documents about China from the Vatical Library. In 2012 prof Ferrero invited prof Sajovic to attend the second yearly Latin Summer Course of Beijing Foreign Studies University. With the official establishment in 2012 of Latinitas Sinica the two institutions have worked even more closely to promote Latin language in China, for example by the publication of a Latin-Chinese edition of “Introduction to Wisdom”, by Juan Luis Vives, by organizing Latin Summer courses in Rome for Chinese students and helping with the translations of XVII century manuscripts in Latin from China. Prof Spataro is also among the advisers of Latinitas Sinica. In 2015 Li Hui, former student of FLCC, began teaching Latin at Beijing Foreign Studies University. There are now four former students of FLCC teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University: Quan Hui, Zhang Mingming, Luo Ying and Li Hui.
During his visit prof Ferrero discussed various areas of future cooperation: scholarships for Chinese students, Summer courses in Rome and in Beijing, publications and translations, etc. He also gave a lecture on “Latin Sinology”.
